PRODUCTION REPORTAGE

Building a house by hand but with rational thinking and industrial efficiency. The result is houses built in a dry environment but where every screw and piece of wood is touched by a human hand.

But why are they building like this?
- At Jörnträhus, we know that the hand and the eye are great tools for adding the final touch and ensuring quality. At the same time, an industrial production environment provides the conditions to control moisture and manufacture houses in a sustainable way. And that's just the way we are. We like that it's a craft. That we get to do it as well as we would like it ourselves," says Andreas Fällman, Production Manager at Jörnträhus.

All Jörnträhuss are manufactured in the house factory in Jörn. The plant is originally an old sawmill that spreads over a land area of 133,000 m² right on the edge of the community. Having such a large plant located in the middle of the northern forest landscape creates unique conditions.

- We don't use all the space available today from the old sawmill, so we never have to worry about lack of space and it creates good conditions for an efficient flow. That's why we can keep such good delivery times," Andreas continues.

»And that's just the way we are - we like it to be a craft.«

IT STARTS AT THE DRAWING BOARD

Bengt Jonsson has long experience as an A-projector. Elvira Andersson is newer to the game, but together with the other designers and planners, they are part of a strong team at Jörnträhus design department.

- Even if we have typical houses in the catalogue, the end result is rarely like that. I don't think we've ever produced a house where we didn't listen to the customer and make adjustments based on their needs. It can be anything from the small, a walk-in closet that will instead become a sauna, to realising a completely unique dream," says Bengt.

- Every house has its own conditions. Perhaps you have planning permission for 100 square metres, in which case a building area of 103 square metres won't work. But it can be solved if we move the gable in a bit and turn the extra room into a walk-in closet," says Elvira.

- "Basically, it's about listening and engaging, it can always be solved," says Bengt.

PRODUCES DREAMS OF A GOOD LIFE

In the production we meet Roger Wikström and Daniel Sgier. Daniel is a former police officer with roots in Switzerland and moved to Jörn in 2019 because he was looking for a simpler life together with his wife and their common interest in pulling dogs.

- Working at Jörnträhus suits me perfectly. Here I can combine an interesting job and our great passion together with the dogs.

- We are always humbled by the fact that we produce people's dreams of a good and relaxing life, Daniel adds. Daniel's move from Switzerland to Jörn is no coincidence. Jörnträhus has managed to attract an exciting mix of experienced northerners and people from the UK, Switzerland and Iceland. This creates a great atmosphere and it's cool to hear English and German mixed with Jörn dialect, says CEO Mikael Lindberg.

»At the end of the day, it's about listening and engaging.«

DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL THINKING

Building customised holiday home kits requires innovation and a love of problem solving.

- We need to constantly work on finding new solutions and developing our production methods. Our customers are passionate about their houses being as good as possible and we must constantly develop to make even better house kits of even higher quality," says Andreas.

Another example of the demands placed on production is the company's endeavour to work sustainably.

- Working sustainably places great demands on production and on our attitude. Minimising waste, sorting, recycling and always using sustainable raw materials is a challenge, but it's like everything else, it just takes a little more commitment," concludes Andreas.
